Choosing gloss or matt kitchen wall tiles? Start with what you want the wall to reflect. A gloss surface can introduce distinct highlights; a matt surface usually gives a softer reflection. Neither label tells you how easily a particular tile cleans. Compare actual samples in the planned position, then check the care guidance for each product.
Give the reflection something specific to reveal
Hold samples upright against the intended wall and keep them secure. Where possible, compare the same colour, size and layout in both finishes. If the products differ in colour, relief or shape, note those differences rather than attributing the whole effect to sheen.
Look from your normal preparation position and from the dining seat or doorway. Notice whether you see a window shape, a bright strip or a softened patch of light. Repeat with the evening lights you intend to use. A sample lying flat on a showroom counter cannot show the same view as your wall.
| View | Notice | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Daylight at the wall | Where the window reflection falls | The position where you like or dislike the highlight |
| Intended evening lighting | Whether a lamp or light strip appears in the tile | Which light and viewing position create the effect |
| Beside cabinet and worktop samples | Whether the wall becomes the main reflective surface | Which surface you want to draw attention to |
Separate sheen, relief and care
A flat matt tile and a rippled gloss tile change two things at once. Look at surface relief separately and ask the supplier how to clean that exact product. Marks being less noticeable does not establish stain resistance or remove the need for cleaning.
Ask for the product reference, approved cleaning method and any special restrictions. Original Style's Living fixing guide gives particular lustre ranges their own cleaning instructions, a useful reminder that a finish name is not a universal care specification. Follow the guidance for the tile you actually select.
Choose the role of the wall
For example, imagine an open-plan kitchen where a pendant is visible from the dining table. If its reflection makes the tiled wall feel busier than you want, compare the matt option from that seat. If you enjoy a lively highlight, retain gloss on the shortlist. The observation, rather than a rule that small kitchens need gloss, gives you a reason for the choice.
Keep the tile layout and grout colour consistent while deciding on sheen. Bring wall photographs, the tile references and cabinet/worktop samples to a kitchen design conversation. Note which reflections you want to keep and which you want to soften, and ask Nura what material examples are available before a showroom visit.
